Military Families Adversely Affected By PandemicNational Scholarship Charity ThanksUSA Forced to Hold Annual Gala Virtually
McLean, VA (October 12, 2020) – The university, college, technical and vocational school plans of America’s military families have been curtailed, cancelled or postponed by the coronavirus. Like millions of American students, the children and spouses of our service members are facing enormous educational challenges – both financial and emotional – because of COVID-19. Caregiver responsibilities, job losses, uncertainty over military moves, and frontline exposure to the coronavirus are among the complications affecting their future education and career trajectories. ThanksUSA, a top provider of scholarships to military spouses and children is committed to supporting military families through the gift of education. The organization will salute our Armed Forces and their families during its annual gala to be held virtually this year. WHAT: ThanksUSA Military Family Gala Virtual Program and Auction WHEN: Saturday, October 17, 2020 6:30 p.m. Virtual Receptions 7:00 p.m. Virtual Program 8:00 p.m. Concert / Hunter Hayes FAMILY OF HONOR: Madisyn Clark, three-time scholarship recipient Father, disabled Army Veteran, Captain Scott Clark Mother, Karen Clark KEYNOTE: Secretary Leon Panetta, 23rd U.S. Secretary of Defense HONOREES: Danny and Jackie Garcia / Lifetime Achievement Award MC: Brianna Keilar, Anchor of CNN Right Now and Author of Home Front MUSIC: Special Performance by Musical Artist Hunter Hayes WHY: To show appreciation through education, thanking America’s troops by caring for their families. Family dependents serve alongside their service members without “wearing” the uniform. More than one-third of military families struggle to pay monthly bills; 24 percent of military spouses are unemployed; military families are 27 percent less likely to have dual incomes compared to civilian families. ThanksUSA strengthens these families by increasing the earning potential for a military spouse or helping a military child attend the school of his/her dreams. Since 2006, ThanksUSA has awarded nearly $16 million to families nationwide, representing all military branches. |
