Appreciation Through Education: Supporting America’s Military Families

ThanksUSA Scholarship 2020/21 Application Season Begins March 1

McLean, VA (February 25, 2020) – Leafa’s Marine Corps Dad was killed serving in Afghanistan, leading her to fulfill his legacy by pursuing Public Health studies. “His kindness to strangers and friends alike engraved in me a deep sense of service; something I have continued to carry with me after his death.”

Leafa’s story is not uncommon among military families. Take Lisa, who was left to support three children after her Army husband was killed during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Returning to college, she says, “is the best way for me to provide a good life for our children.”

Every day, America’s military families serve and sacrifice alongside their loved ones who wear the uniform. What better way to show appreciation than through education? Lisa and Leafa are recipients of needs-based post-secondary school scholarships offered by national non-profit, ThanksUSA. Thousands more need similar help, so starting March 1, 2020, ThanksUSA will launch this academic year’s scholarship application at ThanksUSA.org/apply.

“Supporting our military families at home relieves one of the biggest concerns of our Armed Forces – financial challenges, with education being an enormous burden,” says Jon Rosa, President and CEO of ThanksUSA. “Every year we receive 2,000 applications. ThanksUSA awards several hundred but, clearly, the need is overwhelming.”

How large is the gap? WATCH: A Colorado family explains in their own words.
The annual cost of post-secondary education continues to grow (College Board/Student Budgets 2019-20):
  • The average cost for a public four-year in-state institution is $10,440
  • Out of state, the average rises to $26,820
  • A private nonprofit four-year degree explodes to $36,880

“Since its inception nearly 15 years ago, ThanksUSA has awarded 4,700 scholarships to the tune of $15 million,” says Rosa. “We amplify that through career enhancement programs such as mentoring and internships. Our goal is to magnify the difference we’re making for military families several times over.”
