Legal & General America donates $55,000 to ThanksUSA

Legal & General America's Charitable Giving Campaign kicked off October 23rd and was followed by two weeks of fundraising events as well as donation collection from local businesses.

​LGA employees, with help from the community and their vendors, raised approximately $486,000, exceeding the $380,000 goal. Employees were able to pledge to the charity of their choice, while in-house fundraising events benefited the featured charities.
​
Legal & General America matched the amount raised, so in total $972,000 was donated to hundreds of different charities.

Strada Education Network/ThanksUSA Scholar Alicia Paddock

Including this year's $3,000 Strada Education Network/ThanksUSA scholarship, Alicia Paddock has received ThanksUSA scholarships totaling $6,000 for undergraduate studies at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio.

The daughter of an Air Force Reservist, Alicia majors in Sociology with minors in Spanish and Human Life Studies. “I find my purpose in helping others. While one of my career goals is to become an elementary school teacher, back in my home state of California, I am also open to the possibility of working with children or older adults through social services or community work.”

ThanksUSA Alumni Shadie Andraos

In this special edition of Scholarship News, we present an interview with one of the first military dependents to receive a ThanksUSA scholarship, Shadie Andraos. The oldest of six children, Shadie has served as a role model and mentor not only to his younger siblings, but also to fellow students and colleagues. 

He has remained a dear friend and supporter of ThanksUSA and says, "As I look to my youngest sisters in high school, it is clear that ThanksUSA's mission is as important as ever. For Gabie, Missie, and all military spouses and dependents, affording a college education will continue to be a challenge. I hope that ThanksUSA will continue to receive the support it needs to help this incredible community of people."

Altria Group/Senator Ted Stevens Memorial Fund scholarship recipient Alison Baker

ThanksUSA awarded Marine Corps dependent Alison "Ali" Baker a $3,000 Altria Group/Senator Ted Stevens Memorial Fund scholarship to begin her undergraduate studies at the State University of New York College at Geneseo.

With the goal of becoming a Kindergarten teacher, Ali majors in Childhood and Early Childhood Education. "I would love to positively influence the lives of children, molding the future generation into loving and compassionate individuals."

Kevin Forsyth is looking forward to a rewarding career as a health care professional. The Air National Guard dependent was awarded a $3,000 Jackson Casey Fund/ThanksUSA scholarship to begin his Nursing studies at Misericordia University in Pennsylvania.

Following in the footsteps of his mother and older brother, Kevin will be the third person in his immediate family to become a Nurse.

While volunteering at a summer school for the deaf, Air Force dependent Jasmine Ruffin witnessed many students struggling to learn because of communication barriers.

With the assistance of a $3,000 Stephen Curry/ThanksUSA scholarship, Jasmine enrolled in California State University of Northridge where she intends to earn an undergraduate degree and teaching credentials in Deaf Studies.

In 2008, Army dependent Christine Nussio was awarded a $3,000 ThanksUSA scholarship to begin her History major at Christendom College. By the time she graduated, Christine had received ThanksUSA scholarships totaling $9,000 and had been accepted to a graduate program to earn her M.A. in Education.

In 2010, Army spouse Tia Hicks was awarded a $3,000 Goldman Sachs Gives/ThanksUSA scholarship for her Elementary Education major at Chaminade University of Honolulu.

When I first interviewed her in 2011, Tia explained, "My goal as a teacher is to make certain that all of my students are engaged in their personal learning experience."  

Today, Tia realizes that goal everyday as a first grade teacher at Haynes Elementary School in Killeen, Texas.

ThanksUSA Alumna Katharine Lathrop

We're excited to give an update on ThanksUSA Alumna and Marine Corps dependent, Katharine MacKnight Lathrop. Katharine was awarded $6,000 in ThanksUSA scholarships for her Television and Broadcast Journalism studies at Chapman University. 

In 2012, Katharine joined ThanksUSA spokesperson Lisa Raymond to record a Public Service Announcement for ThanksUSA. Shortly afterwards, she moved to Billings, Montana, to begin her broadcast career at NBC affiliate, KULR-8 News. Though she had never evn visited Montana, Katharine says, "Moving was both scary and exciting for me, and I learned so much about myself as a person and as a journalist. I am thankful for every experience in Montana, but can't wait for the next step in my career!"

Today is a great day for the annual ThanksUSA Charity Golf Tournament!  Hosted by Intelligent Decisions and RAI Services Company, today's event will raise funds for ThanksUSA scholarships.  To date, over 3,000 military spouses and dependent children have received ThanksUSA scholarships totaling nearly $10 million.  Two of those scholars, Charlotte Orren and Morgan Dean, will be joining us today.

The spouse of an Army National Guard Veteran, Geri Lynn Maples has always loved and supported her extended military family. With experience in finance and mortgage, she decided to earn her degree in order to better serve her military clients. With the assistance of $6,000 in ThanksUSA scholarships, Geri Lynn completed her undergrad studies and graduated from Miami University in Ohio in 2012. 

Staying true to her commitment to military families, Geri Lynn is a Mortgage Professional at Union Savings Bank specializing in Veterans Home Loans. She also co-founded the Midwest Veterans Network, a group of business professionals who work diligently, "Taking care of the families that gave so much to this country"
