My mom served in the United States Air Force and was a fighter jet crew chief. She met my father while stationed at Kadena AB in Okinawa, Japan, and they married and started their family there. My mother served for four years on active duty and supported my father as an Air Force spouse until he retired after 20 years of service. She has supported two of her children's military service as well as her only grandson's. She is part of the reason that I developed the desire to serve my country at a young age. I'm grateful for her service and her continued support.
(Renee from OH) -------------------- My mom works tirelessly to provide a life for me and my brother that she did not have when she was young. Both my mom and dad immigrated to the United States from Poland for better opportunities. A few years after I was born, my dad enlisted into the Army, and the deployments and moves we had to experience were tough. My mom was a strong rock for me and my brother through those difficulties; she was able to fill the space of my dad when he couldn't be there. When we went through periods of missing him, my mom comforted us in a way that made us know everything was going to be okay. I'm eternally grateful for her strong presence in my life, even though she must have went through similar struggles. (Emilia from MO) |

-------------------- Special is an understatement. My "military mom" is my spouse, mother to my children, and a superhero to us all. Sacrifices I make as a service member is overshadowed by the resiliency that this woman has displayed from multiple lost job opportunities, bandages applied (physical/mental) to our children, and the smile on her face to mask the stress. If there would be a poem for her, it would read: Resiliency Sunrise and sunset The pressures of life crept One step at a time, one move after another Gathering the brother and sister Smiles upon smiles with Thor hammer might There is always light in sight Her heart full of caring and love She is peaceful as a dove Carrying the load on her shoulders Like metric tons of boulders One step at a time, one move after another The military mom is our superhero (Jonathan from CO) |
My mother is the consummate 'military mom'; I have learned so many things from her and her experiences with my dad's military service. I too have married a service member and without my mom, I would have been lost. The most important rule she taught me was "Lauren you better laugh, you can get the same stress relief laughing as you can crying so it better to find the humor even in your misery." I always thought she was crazy saying that until I was under tremendous pressure -- the washer broke and flooded the laundry area, my 8-year-old son colored on his 2-year-old sister with sharpie markers, the puppy was being a puppy and chewing on everything, and it was Mother's Day and we were due at church where I was supposed to speak about "Keeping Calm in the Storm." Did I mention my husband was deployed...:) Immediately I started to laugh, and I mean laugh hard, my kids and the puppy looked at me and I continued to laugh. I called my mom and told her everything and she laughed with me... Through the laughter, I realized everything was going to be "OK". I also realized my resiliency is born of my mothers challenges that she morphed into humor. I thanked her for being there for me and her last bit of advice was "laughing doesn't mean everything is perfect, it just means the struggle is not larger than I can handle and to remember, my daughter looks beautiful painted red, purple and green." Dear Mom, Thank you for showing me how to laugh when I want to cry, stand up when I want to lay down and cry and to continue to show love, when I need a hug most. You are the most beautiful women I have ever met, inside and out...I love you mommy.
